Racing Uk Zetland Gold Cup Handicap (Class 2) (3YO plus) 1M 2F 1Y
This is a good quality field with many of the runners having sound enough claims. BEARDWOOD is dropped in class and one feels that he’ll put his previous runs this year to good use in this one. However, his breeding wouldn’t suggest that this trip and going are going to prove completely suitable for him. Despite being sent out for the in-form Johnston yard, those questions are enough to leave alone under these conditions. EUCHEN GLEN has easily the best distance strike rate, with 2 wins from 3 runs. Although not a massive sample size he obviously prospers at this trip and is 7lbs better off from his LTO victory over the same distance and going. Jim Goldie has been in fine form recently after hitting a double at Ayr this week and we have to suspect that his horses are good shape for their campaigns. With such a good strike rate, excellent treatment and an inform yard, we can add a further positive in that Sam James is riding today and he’s Goldie’s highest earning jockey. The only slight question would be how he takes to this course, but there’s enough ability in this horse to make it worth siding with him in this one. Talking of course form leads us to another selection in this race who is hard to overlook – HIBOU. This gelding currently holds the C&D record which was ran on the same ground conditions and is only up 2lbs from the time he set that day of 2m3.05. Not disgraced in either of his last two outings he was ramped up in the weights for a close 3rd on his penultimate start before coming home in 6th when upped in class LTO. The stewards have actually held an enquiry into this horse being held back before, and although there was no penalty on that occasion, we have to suspect that he has a lot of potential that hasn’t been seen so far. Whether he has his reigns let out today or not, he’s excellent value in this one and well worth an each way play.
EUCHEN GLEN 0.5 pts e/w 11/2 Bet365
HIBOU 0.5 pts e/w 14/1 Bet365

Famous Monday Night Racing Handicap (Class 4) (4YO plus) 6F 12Y
DANCASE has perhaps got the best treatment of any horse across the cards today. He’s dropped 8lbs from his victory over this trip LTO and goes well on the firmer ground – he’s an excellent prospect and has strong win-only claims. However as regular readers will know, it’s not my style to limit myself to only one possible successful outcome and so we are going to look at the value angle in this race. RIO RONALDO, who finds himself 2lbs lower than his last winning mark fits that bill perfectly. Although we have to go back to this race last year for his last win, he’s been working in higher classes than this and at higher weights as well. It’s more than possible that he retains the ability to run well given his treatment and he’s got a very good strike rate at this course, especially in this class. Trainer Mike Murphy and jockey James Doyle could both have been in better form coming into this, but with only a six runners/rides in the last couple of weeks, there’s not a lot of data to work with. Overall, there are enough positives for the selection in this one to make a good value each way play and to see if he can return to winning ways from way down in the market.
